GETTING STARTED

Important
Participation Steps

Replacing lead service lines in Westerly is a team effort, and it starts with residents taking a few simple steps. When households participate, the program can move smoothly through each neighborhood and make sure properties are ready for replacement when crews arrive.

Participation starts with service line material verification and the Right of Entry (ROE) form. Verification confirms what type of service line is on your property. The ROE gives the Town and EquiFlow permission to access and replace the portion of the service line on your property. Completing both steps helps prevent delays and ensures your home is fully prepared for replacement.

IMPORTANCE

Why It Matters: Health & Safety

Lead exposure, even at low levels, can have lasting impacts on health. Replacing lead service lines helps reduce those risks and strengthens confidence in local drinking water.

Children

Lead exposure can affect learning, behavior, development, and hearing.

Pregnant Individuals

Exposure may impact fetal growth and increase risk of premature birth.

Adults

Lead can contribute to higher blood pressure, kidney strain, and reproductive challenges.

There is no known safe level of lead exposure, and the EPA’s goal for lead in drinking water is zero. Acting now by participating in the EquiFlow Lead-Free Program helps address aging infrastructure and supports the long-term well-being of the Westerly community.

HEALTH & SAFETY

Reduce Your Exposure

A few daily habits can help limit lead in your water:

Run your tap for 1-2 minutes if water hasn’t been used for several hours.

Use cold water for drinking, cooking, and preparing infant formula.

Clean faucet aerators regularly to remove debris.

Use a certified filter (NSF/ANSI Standard 53) if you choose to use a filter.

Flush your taps after plumbing or street work, which can temporarily increase lead levels.
