IMPORTANCE

Why is Verification Important?

Verifying your service line is one of the most important steps in the lead-free process. Before any replacements begin, the EquiFlow team needs to confirm what type of service line feeds water into each home. This information allows the program to accurately document every property, plan construction in an efficient order, coordinate work, and make sure no household is overlooked.

Whether you choose to schedule an appointment or complete the self-verification online, taking this step ensures your home is recorded correctly and ready for replacement when work reaches your area.

MATERIAL TYPES

Service Line Material Type

During verification, we’re identifying which material brings water into your home. Your line may be made of one of the following:

Lead

Dull, gray, and bendable. Often curves between the wall or floor and the valve. No threads at the connection point. Scratches to a shiny silver. A magnet does not stick.

Copper

Brown metal with possible green corrosion spots. No threads at the connection point. Scratches to a copper color, like a penny. A magnet does not stick.

Galvanized Iron

Dark gray or black. Straight and rigid. Has threads at the connection point. Scratches to a dull silver that is harder than lead. A magnet will stick.

How to Verify Your Line

Schedule an Appointment

If you’d prefer an in-person visit to verify your service line material, an EquiFlow team member can come to your home to complete the verification for you. During the appointment, they’ll identify the material of your service line, explain what it means for your replacement eligibility, and walk through the next steps so you know exactly what to expect. Self-Verify Online

The online verification process is quick and straightforward. All you need is a clear photo of the pipe where it enters your home. The spot is usually near a basement wall, inside a utility room, or next to the water meter.

The entire process only takes a few minutes:

1. Locate your water meter and the point where the service line enters your home.
2. Take a clear, well-lit photo of the pipe at that spot.
3. Upload your photo using the self-verification form.
4. The EquiFlow team will review your submission and share what material was identified as well as what comes next.

  1. Find your water meter inside your house. The meter is usually in your basement or utility area (it is not outside your house). Refer to the example photos on the right for help identifying the water meter in your home.
  2. Once at your water meter, locate the pipe that goes into the floor. This is your incoming water service line.

  3. Clear the area surrounding the pipe and water meter of all obstructions.

  4. On your camera, turn the flash ON (not on auto, turn it ON).

  5. Position your camera/phone no higher than your waist, parallel to the ground, 4' to 6' from the water meter and where the water service line comes out of the floor. Refer to the photo on the right for a good example of what your photo submission should look like.
  6. After taking the photo, please review it to ensure it’s in focus, the flash went off, and the following items are clearly visible in the frame:

  • The water meter
  • The location where the incoming water service line comes through the floor
